Authenticity in a Digital World – What’s Your Story?

Introduction

In today’s digital world, technology has revolutionized the way we communicate, interact, and visualize information. With the rise of AI, social media, and digital platforms, much of our personal connections and interactions have shifted away from face-to-face engagement and become more automated, streamlined, and often less personal.

Social media platforms, for example, prioritize quick exchanges, such as likes, comments, and shares, often reducing emotions and thoughts into easily digestible bits of information.  The challenge becomes how to embrace the advantages of digital tools—speed, accessibility, and convenience—while still finding ways to keep things human and authentic and retain some sense of personal connection and individuality.

Ben Zeitlin, founder of MyVideoStory, has developed a method to blend professional and personal stories, effectively showing you how to demonstrate authenticity and make meaningful connections in today’s modern world.

How Do We Think About Communication and Connection

In a world where time is money and everyone has something to sell, people are inundated and jaded with content and ads.  So how do you break through the clutter and distinguish what is real, what will add value, and who is trustworthy?

We generally think about communication on an enterprise level, every organization carefully crafts their own brand to reach a broader audience to sell their products and services. But what is behind these offerings? People who make or break the experience. By the type of connections, they have created.

So how can business executives use strategic videos to communicate and to help break through some of that clutter?  The answer is simple—By focusing less on the corporation level and more on the individual business executives. It is a way for the outside world to get to know the people they are trusting to provide a service or to deliver a product. Wouldn’t that give them a competitive advantage in the marketplace?

In this fast-paced world, people often don’t want to take the time to read a whole lot, especially if they’re being pitched something. However, people more often than not, are more willing to listen to a podcast or watch a brief video and therein lies the advantage.

It’s about personal connection and hence the video aspect. Video is the only medium that gives you sight, sound, motion and emotion. It is something that people can really take advantage of to create personal connections. However, to do this correctly, you have to be authentic. Don’t ever be highly scripted. You should know the key message points that you want to convey, and never read off a sheet of paper, especially with social media or LinkedIn videos. Your audience will see through this and ultimately see you as somebody that’s trying to sell them something instead of perhaps somebody who’s trying to educate them, share knowledge or be a thought leader in their field.

Ultimately, its authenticity that counts. Being mindful that while you may be the person featured in the video, it is not about you. It’s about the viewer. It’s not about the “what’s in it for me”, but rather “what’s in it for your viewer.”  That is what you should be speaking to and that’s also part of the authenticity and connecting with people on a more personal level.

How Can Videos be a Useful Tool for People?

Regardless of what part of life’s journey or role you are in, whether it be in a job search, or part of a big team that’s trying to win business, or maybe you are a lawyer at a firm or a CFO.  Professionals can use or incorporate videos as a form of communication in the following ways:

  • Video business cards
  • Thought leadership videos
  • Client testimonial videos
  • An email signature
  • LinkedIn profile or website
  • Introductions and referrals
  • As a keynote speaker for an event
  • Business proposals
  • Newsletters

Videos are a quick, effective and personal way to introduce yourself and communicate the “so what?” about who you are.

There are some people or smaller and midsize organizations that can do this on their own but there are many people that just don’t have the time, resources or the know-how and can use a little help. That’s where Ben Zeitlin can help. Ben spent several years in sales and in business development. He looks at the world through a business lens beyond what many video producers bring to the table. He looks to understand the strategic objective; making sure that he understands the intention – Is it to drive more revenue? Is it to enroll more employees and talent?  Ben works diligently to make sure the process is easy and seamless. Videos can be recorded in person or via Zoom, ensuring a professional and polished production that highlights your authentic self.
