Shifting Perspective → Counterintuitive Thinking

We often hear buzz phrases like “thinking outside the box” or “strategic thinking” but what does that really mean?  It is natural to tie these phrases back to business, innovation, selling and problem solving. However, often these phrases trigger people to fall back on old habits or look to competitors or AI for inspiration and ideas. This often leads to a lack of authenticity and the tendency to quickly jump to conclusions.

There is certainly no shortage of data and content floating around. That is not the problem. It’s perspective. Just like content without strategy is just noise.

Counterintuitive thinking is one of those ideas that feels almost paradoxical at first—because it asks you to distrust your first instinct and look in the opposite direction.

What if we took a different approach to thinking?

Counterintuitive thinking means arriving at conclusions that go against what seems obvious or natural at first glance.

That’s often your cue to ask:

  • What if the opposite is true?
  • What am I assuming?
  • What am I missing?

You don’t need new answers—you need a new lens. Perspective is vital to this thinking. It shapes what you see and what you don’t see. It’s like framing content. Change the framing, and you change the context, interpretation, and impact of the content. In doing so, you can either limit possibilities or unlock new opportunities.

When we come up with an idea, concept or product, we often jump too quickly to “How can I monetize this? We have to answer to deadlines, economic pressure and growth targets.

We have only to look to all of the new AI apps that are being built. Everyone is jumping on the bandwagon, chasing the next trend, trying to monetize on the backs of other applications. The growth of AI applications underscores a dynamic and evolving market—one where, over time, only a select group will distinguish themselves through lasting impact.

Consider This

What if we take a counterintuitive approach? Question what seems obvious and see what others miss.

  • What is your core value and how is it different?
  • How well does a product or service’s positioning resonate?
  • Are you taking an honest look at the service, product or problem?
  • What assumptions are you holding as truth?
  • Is your product or service something that you would buy?
  • Are you selling your expertise or leading the conversation?
  • Do you really have all of the answers?

An example of how counterintuitive thinking plays out:

Instead of Adding Value → Remove Noise

  • Intuitive: Add more insights, frameworks or tips.
  • Counterintuitive: Refine insight and say one sharp, clear idea that creates value.

Why does this work? It’s simple. Brevity signals clarity. For example, instead of saying How to successfully launch your product” try “Most product launches fail for one reason: they try to speak to everyone at once.”

In short—simplicity requires deeper understanding.

The same approach also works in problem solving. Counterintuitive thinking flips the default approach:

  • Instead of rushing to solutions → question the problem
  • Instead of adding fixes → remove assumptions
  • Instead of doing more → do less, but better

The Advent of AI—Bias and Preconceived Notions

I am a big advocate of AI—to an extent. Can you guess why?  It’s simple. We’ve all come across AI-generated content that isn’t real. Some of it is obvious, but some is convincing enough to lead people to the wrong conclusions—and that’s often by design.

I am certainly forward thinking, but there is a part of me that thinks there is something to be said for genuine conversations and integrated thinking—honest, human and credible. People trust process over conclusions. Counterintuitive thinking reinforces this trust.

All too often our judgement is compromised or biased by all of the content that we absorb on a daily and even minute to minute basis. Better thinking is tabling the preconceived notions, getting outside of your own head, thinking objectively about what you are trying to solve, and adaptability.

Final Thoughts

Are we honest enough to admit flaws—and willing to be a little vulnerable?  Is that really a bad thing? In my experience, that’s where trust is built. That’s what creates something real. It turns transactions into conversations.

Products, services and even skills can be replaced. What’s rare is ingenuity, trust, genuine connection, and a differentiated perspective that actually creates impact. Chasing quick wins and speed often comes at a steep cost. What endures is something else entirely different: it isn’t visibility—it’s authenticity, a perspective that matters, and an impact worth remembering. That’s what truly resonates—and what drives a reliable pipeline of opportunities and lasting partnerships.
